http://www.amazon.com/review/R2YMND3ZT5J323/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B004HZXYX4 Thank you for this kind review. I’ve learned to be thick-skinned about book reviews, especially in the Amazon era. For while most of my book reviews have been positive, you occasionally get the horrible review. That’s fair enough. Heck, the reader has a million options on Amazon alone to choose from, so they can be forgiven for being demanding. Sometimes it even seems like the very best writers get the most terrible reviews. Just at look...

iof”Be finished by October 1st,” they told us at the annual Pacific Crest Trail Kickoff. “Anything after that is borrowed time.” That, folks, is good advice. I know. I was still racing north in early October, 2009, down 40 pounds and worried about either getting badly lost or caught in a bad snowstorm. Fortunately neither happened (both happened plenty of times before that last week), and I was able to arrive at Manning Park in Canada on October 9th. However last year the PCT thru-hikers didn’t have any such luck....

“This is the most realistic look at the tough slog that is an Appalachian trail thru-hike,” a recent book reviewer wrote on Amazon.com. Those words were music to my ears. For that is the exact purpose I had upon setting out to thru-hike the 2,180 mile Appalachian Trail, which runs 14 states from Springer Mountain in north Georgia to Mount Katahdin in northern Maine in 2005 despite never having even spent a single night outdoors. My thru-hike often seemed like a see-saw battle between my determination on the one hand and...

I stopped off at the Standing Bear Hostel just north of the Great Smoky Mountains yesterday and was pleased to see hordes of members of the Appalachian Trail (AT) thru-hiking class of 2014 streaming by. According to the Standing Bear owner, Curtis, this is on record to be the busiest year on record. And once again the AT staggers the imagination with its diversity. The man I dropped off is 71 years old and hoping to do the trail in ten different sections over as many years. Meanwhile, there are solo-hikers with their race shoes hoping to...
