Ray Day on the Pacific Crest Trail
Today is “Ray Day” on the Pacific Crest Trail. June 15th. More importantly, it is the traditional date of PCT hikers entering the daunting High Sierra. PCT thru-hikers will eventually reach the highest points on the entire American mainland. Snow levels are reputedly at record levels this year. Honestly, I would be at turns thrilled, and scared to death. I did the PCT in an average snow year, and still was horrified, when not ecstatic. Good luck PCT hikers. My only advice is to try to stick together in the worst parts. An ice axe...
read moreGay Hikers Are Well Represented on America’s Hiking Trails
Gay hikers are disproportionately represented on both the Appalachain Trail and Pacific Crest Trail. While I’m personally not gay, I noticed that those who were gay seemed to fit in seamlessly. It just wasn’t an issue in our intense day-to-day struggles. “I never in my life felt so free, such a part of a community,” said Magic Bullet in Yogi’s PCT Handbook. Gay partners openly hiked and camped together. Issues such as gay marriage, gays in the military, etc. were openly debated. “If in doubt, walk,”...

I checked this book out from my local library and could scarcely put it down. This is the first Appalachian Trail thru-hike account I’ve read and I’m not a hiker myself. I found this story about the underdog who achieved his goal really interesting and entertaining. It makes me want to wimp-out and be a “section hiker” some day just to experience a portion of the AT. 5.0 out of 5 stars Skywalker – inspiration for all!, November 26, 2009 By Holly M. Robert Redford will play Branch Rickey — or Bill Bryson In April, Robert Redford tipped 24 Frames that he’d star in a movie about the relationship between Brooklyn Dodgers executive Branch Rickey and second baseman Jackie Robinson. It’s official: ebooks have eclipsed their print counterparts — at least on Amazon. According to a new press release from the online retailer, as of today, customers are buying up more virtual books than hardback and paperback books combined. The milestone is impressive, and highlights both the popularity of the company’s e-reader, the Kindle, and the rise of the ebook as a legitimate publishing medium. Amazon’s Kindle bookstore continues to grow by leaps and bounds. According to the company, in 2011, it had sold 3 times as...

There are more German pilgrims on El Camino de Santiago than any other nationality. That is probably because of the popular book by German comedian, Hape Kerkeling. It’s called, I’m Off Now, and sold 3,000,000 copies just in Germany. Before its publication, there were more French pilgrims. There are also many Italian bycicle riders on El Camino. Catholic nations such as Ireland and Poland are well represented, as well. Latin Americans are beginning to come to the Camino as well, especially Brazilians after well-known writer, Paulo...

This review is from: Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian trail (Kindle Edition) Loved it! I’ve been reading all of the AT travelogue books these past few weeks, and this one was probably my fave (really liked AWOL and 300 Zeros too, but this one stood out). I’ve noticed most books on the subject seem to talk about the personal struggles that one deals with as they walk...
