Ray Day on the Pacific Crest Trail

Today is “Ray Day” on the Pacific Crest Trail. June 15th. More importantly, it is the traditional date of PCT hikers entering the daunting High Sierra. PCT thru-hikers will eventually reach the highest points on the entire American mainland.

Snow levels are reputedly at record levels this year. Honestly, I would be at turns thrilled, and scared to death. I did the PCT in an average snow year, and still was horrified, when not ecstatic.

Good luck PCT hikers. My only advice is to try to stick together in the worst parts. An ice axe only helps if you know how to use it. Crampons might be the more practical alternative.
