Jennifer Pharr Davis broke the women’s record on the Appalachain Trail in 2008. It took her 57 days. This year (The 2011 hiking season) she smashed the men’s record as well, taking on ly 46 days and 11 hours. Unbelievable. Scott Williamson broke the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) record in 2009. UNSUPPORTED, he did it in 65 days. Olympian-like feat as those of us who have hiked the PCT know. Who could break their records? Objectively, the only person who could break Davis’ (Odyssa’s) AT record is Scott Williamson. Likewise,...

2011 is shaping up to be the deadliest year in Yosemite in recent memory. A San Ramon woman who fell to her death Sunday from Half Dome was the 14th person to die in the national park this year. Haley LaFlamme, 26, was descending the dome’s rain-soaked granite face using mounted cables around noon Sunday when she slipped and fell 600 feet. Yosemite typically sees five or six deaths by the end of July and 12 to 15 by the year’s end, said Kari Cobb, a spokeswoman for the park. Interactive: Yosemite’s four seasons An influx of...

The first biq question an American pilgrim has is how to get to the Camino. The Camino Frances, which is the main route of El Camino de Santiago, begins at St. Jean’s Pied de Port in the very southern part of France. Most Americans choose to fly to either Madrid or Barcelona, and take the bus or train from there to Pamplona. In the high summer months, there is a bus that leaves each day from Pamplona at 2 in the afternoon and arrives at St. Jean’s Pied de Port at 4:00. That is a good option. However, some American pilgrims choose...

Even though it was not a holy year, The Camino had another great year. Pilgrims from around the world traversed the European continent on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The Camino, of course, is one of the three great Christian pilgrimages (the other two to Jerusalem and Rome). The Germans were probably best represented of all the nationalities. This is because of the popular book on the Camino by famous comedian, Hape Kerkeling. The French and Spanish were next, followed by Italians. Curiously, the British were not there in great numbers....
