To be honest, I was a bit shocked. Yes, I know that wilderness and an outdoor orientation seem to actually run in the American DNA. But I didn’t expect this. As part of the Amazon KDP Select Program, I decided to run a two-day special offering free upload on Kindle of3outdoor narratives, Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail (2008), Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail (2010), and ‘The Best Way–El Camino de Santiago’ (2012). I couldn’t believe it when I turned on the...

Amazon Prime members can upload Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail for free. This book is a narrative of Bill Walker´s thru-hike of the 2,180 mile Appalachian Trail. Walker had developed a virtual obsession with thru-hiking this national scenic trail after reading A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson. This was in spite of never having spent a single night outdoors. He set off in the spring of 2005, full of hopes and fears. He picked up his trail name, Skywalker, due to his near 7-foot height. His fellow hikers gawked...

Is Height an Advantage or Disadvantage on Hiking Trails?

Posted by on June 28, 2012 in Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail, Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail | 1 comment

Height–the great talisman. Surveys consistently show that 98% of people want to be taller. And this national trend plays out in microcosm on America’s hiking trails. I am 6’11”. When I am out hiking, countless people ask me what my exact height is, almost always followed by lamentations they aren’t taller themselves. But is it possible that great height is nothing more than a talisman?  The answer is a resounding YES. I can not begin to count the number of times that I got passed on the Appalachian...

Bill Bryson, Cheryl Strayed, Jon Krakauer, and Hape Kerkeling Heavily Influence Outdoors Activity–Kudos

Hikers are serious people. No, they aren’t serious in the Mitt Romney, Donald Trump, or Bill Gates way. They have a different focus. It’s a broader one–theGreat Outdoors. Hikers, pilgrims, and of course, outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen don’t like to be confined inside for too long. Their central nervous system thrums at a higher pitch when engaged deep within wilderness, scaling peaks, or perhaps even slogging dutifully through the desert. They seek difficulty. The sedentary lifestyle isn’t even remotely a...

Appalachian Trail Hikers Greatest Enemy–Summertime Heat

Posted by on June 24, 2012 in Appalachian Trail, Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail | 2 comments

“You will have a lot more trouble with hot weather than cold weather,” Warren Doyle assured me. “I don’t know,” I responded. “I’m a poster child for the hypothermia culture.” This was a critical question as I prepared to thru-hike the 2,181 mile Appalachian Trail. For a hiker of average abilities like myself, a walk of that length is going to take almost six months. And given that an Appalachian Trail thru-hiker begins in the springtime in the high elevations of the southern Appalachians...

JUNE 21st–Hike Naked Day on the Appalachian Trail!

Posted by on June 20, 2012 in Appalachian Trail, Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail | 5 comments

Tomorrow, June 21st, is the annual Hike Naked Day on the Appalachian Trail (AT). All across the 14 states and 2,180 miles of this famous national scenic trail there will be un-clad, two-legged beings galloping gleefully through the wilderness. What could be better? Well, let me first disclose, I am all talk no action. “Come on, Skywalker, what have you got to lose,” I was repeatedly prompted on June 21st, 2006. Nonetheless, I opted out of Hike Naked Day when I thru-hiked the AT. By June 21st of that year,  I was already down 30...

John Muir Trail is Best Medium Distance Trail in America

Posted by on June 19, 2012 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

The John Muir Trail runs 219 miles southbound from Yosemite Valley to Mount Whitney. This trail coincides with the Pacific Crest Trail, and covers what many consider the very most gorgeous parts of the famously gorgeous Pacific Crest Trail. Most John Muir Trail (JMT) hikers choose to do this trail in July and August when the snow is mostly gone. This is different from Pacific Crest Trail hikers who are forced to enter this section (The ‘High Sierras’) sooner than desirable in order to give them enough time to get to Canada....
