Do Your Best on the Appalachian and Pacific Crest Trails

“I’m 65 and can’t do the whole thing,” a lady recently responded on my Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) blog. Point well taken. Although I met a man on the PCT whose trail name was ‘Two Weeks and Three Days’. When he had retired as a civil servant that spring, he had announced to (rather than discussed with) his wife that he would now be thru-hiking the 2,663 mile PCT from Mexico to Canada. His wife, who had never even heard of this national scenic trail, was dumbfounded. She began calling all of her friends and...

Pacific Crest Trail Offers Great Section Hikes

Posted by on January 19, 2013 in Pacific Crest Trail, Section hikes | 0 comments

Given the magnificence of the 2,663 mile Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in its entirety, it is no surprise that there are many great section hikes also available. First though, you must decide which part of the Mexico-Canada traverse you wish to embed yourself in. There are basically four options: 1. The desert  2. The ‘High Sierra’   3.  southern Oregon   4. northern Cascades The first option would be the most contrarian, for the simple reason that thru-hikers consider the desert something to just survive through. Having...

Basic Advice for Pacific Crest Trail Thru-Hikers

Posted by on January 8, 2013 in Pacific Crest Trail, Skywalker--Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail | 2 comments

My most basic advice for an aspiring thru-hiker on the Pacific Crest Trail is twofold: First, regardless of how strange it seems, you must buy a pair of low-cut trail running shoes that are at least one size larger than normal. The surface in the desert is so scalding that your feet will turn into kangaroo feet. And please, under no circumstances wear boots. The thought of boots in the desert (and resulting silver dollar-sized blisters) is truly gut wrenching. Please do yourself this favor. But an even better favor you could do yourself would...

Basic Advice for Appalachian Trail Thru-Hikers

Posted by on December 31, 2012 in Appalachian Trail, Skywalker--Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail | 0 comments

Truth be known, asking me for advice on thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail is about like asking the captain of the Titanic for advice on navigation. I struggled every step of the way in my 2005 thru-hike of this great national scenic trail. Of the people who made it all the way, I was one of the worst. In fact, there were many hikers who were much better and stronger than me who did not complete the hike. So while I am much more fluent in the subject of what NOT to do, I do have a couple useful pointers. First, except for an exceptionally...
