Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail will be eligible for a free upload on Amazon Kindle for Monday and Tuesday, January 21, 22, 2013. This popular trail narrative tells the story of 6’11” Bill Walker’s (Skywalker) 2005 thru-hike of the 2,175 mile Appalachian Trail (AT). Walker had developed a virtual obsession with thru-hiking the AT, despite never having spent a single night outdoors. What followed was a 171 day struggle that seemed like a battle between his determination on the one hand, and incompetence on the other. Also, the reader will get a feel for America’s trail of the masses, the Appalachian Trail, along with the colorful personalities that dot its pristine environs each and every year.

  1. Just finished your “Skywalker” books on the AT and the PCT. As a longtime backpacker who’s never stayed more than a week on a trail, I was pret-ty amazed at your fortitude, especially with your first experience on the AT thruhike. However, the adventure is not about the equipment, eh? With the great stuff I’ve accumulated during 30 years of playtime hiking, I am embarrassed I have not put myself out there, as you have. I enjoyed the Kindle armchair reading experience, though. Safe travels and look forward to reading about your next adventure.
