i read a couple scathing reviews which made me hesitate, but i’m glad i got it anyway.
this book is much more about PCT culture than about the trail itself, though the general setting and challenges are discussed. in a way the accounts of conversations and situations the writer find himself in describe the trail in a way that the narrow scope of “trail info” can’t capture. i am very pleased with this book. got it today and am half way through.
people that are put off by slang, curse words, and light bathroom humor might be turned off, but it’s nothing worse than you’d see on an episode of the daily show… just maybe not scholarly material. i appreciate the honest and straight foreward approach. back to reading! I had the pleasure of reading this book while on vacation. Its descriptions and sequences are sensational. The author has done a good job conveying the hazards and dangers that one faces on the Pacific Crest Trail. He also shares tons of photos that lend the book a feeling of being portal in to a world that fortunate few get to see. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the regional history as well. Bill includes tons of historical narratives and literary references which allows for the reader to see that this trip is the culmination of an erudite life not simply a misguided adventure. 5.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read, Hard Trail, December 25, 2011

Read it on top of the Appalachian Trail book. Different trail, but same hiker and writer. His strength is character analysis–of himself and others. His books appeal to non-hikers, as much as hikers. He does a great job of describing the majesty of the PCT and the people on it. It honestly sounds like a tremendous challenge to be savored. No surprise to hear some of these trail names and type of characters that dot it along the way. Good follow-up to his AT book.
