Book Review for Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail
Bill Walker’s folksy account of his Pacific Crest Trail hike holds your attention from start to finish. You don’t have to be a hiker to get caught up in the daily drama that unfolds as he describes the awesome beauty of the region, overcomes incredible obstacles and meets an amazing assortment of characters who provide the yeast to his readable literary loaf! A great sequel to his Appalachian Trail yarn.

This was a super quick read (one day) and it was pretty interesting. He provides background information about the AT and a little history. I would have liked more commentary on the places/people he encountered. A more in depth ending would also have been nice. Overall, it makes me want to hop outside and take a hike. 🙂 Thanks for the recommendation on Goodreads.com Indeed, it was meant to be a page-turner and quick read. But my fondest hope was to inspire others to do just what this lady recommends: “Hop outside and take a hike.”

An entertaining journey through the eyes of Skywalker. His humor and honesty is refreshing. It made my feet itch for the trip to Manning Park. Thank you Kathryn Eli. Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail is now the top selling Pacific Crest Trail narrative.

We have the latest field data regarding this years snow pack as of April 1st. Tuolumne River 171% Merced 172% San Joaquin 178% Kings 172% Kern 195% As of April 1st this is I believe, the 5th wettest (water equivalent) pack in recorded history but still far short of the record ~250% of 1983. The Pacific Crest Trail Class of 2011 obviously has its work cut out. I strongly recommend they consider wearing crampons. They are more user friendly than an ice axe. The downhills might be even worse than the uphills. Trust your gut. If in serious doubt,...

It’s gratifying that sales of Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail, are finally beginning to reach their potential again. This irreverent narrative came out in 2008 and immediately sold well–approximately equal to sales of AWOL on the Appalachian Trail by David Miller (of course, we were both behind Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods). But then my publisher, Indigo Publishing, went broke. Orders on Amazon.com went unfulfilled for almost a year. People who asked about the book were seeing prices of $75....

At the 25th annual Appalachian Trail Days Festival this weekend, there was great interest in the nation’s other great national scenic trail–the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). Indeed, sales of Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail were double the sales of my Appalachian Trail book. This was in spite of it being an Appalachian Trail event. Also, the fine documentary–Six Million Steps– drew alot of great interest, as well as a very funny film by well-known Appalachian Trail personality, Jester. All good...

Sales of Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail are surging on Kindle. I got some good advice from my close friend, Dennis Blanchard, to reduce my Kindle price to below $5. Dennis says that the book category, “Books Under $5” is very popular amongst avid readers. One testament to that is the high volume of Kindle sales of Dennis’ book, Three Hundred Zeroes. Likewise, my sales have gone up sharply since reducing the price to less than $5. So it works for everybody. Move over Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg....

The 25th annual Trail Days Festival in Damascus was another huge success. Honestly, the Great Recession doesn’t seem to have even touched the Appalachian Trail. The Pacific Crest Trail reports the same thing. Hey, we Americans have our priorities in order after all. There were some incredible innovations amongst vendors, from candle-making to disappearing tattoes, to finely-carved hiking poles. Better yet, most vendors appeared to do well. Personally, I sold more books than I ever have at Trail Days. Skywalker–Highs and Lows on...
