“Have there been any sales?” I asked the lady.

She leafed through her sheets before reporting, “Yeah, quite a few.”

“Well I haven’t been paid yet,” I reported to her.

“Give me a day to look into it.”

“Okay.”

However, my experience in dealing with big companies told me it would be  a lot more than one day. Fortunately, I was wrong.

I was talking to Contessa Nyree of Audible.com. This is the Amazon subsidiary in charge of audiotaping books. They had contacted me several months back in order to purchase the rights to my Pacific Crest Trail narrative, ‘Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail’.

“Who is going to do the recording?” I had asked.

“We usually hire somebody to do it.”

“Could I do it?” I asked. “I know the context better than any recorder could.”

After some discussion, they agreed to this proposition. Then the recording process started; it blew my mind. Folks, these people are perfectionists; now I understand why they hire professionals to do the recordings. One small octave off in your voice, the slightest hesitation, blur, you name it, the recording technician would click his button and say, “Repeat.” I grew paranoid about that button. Ultimately, after three all day sessions, the 7 hour 38 minute tape of the book was finished. Better yet, they paid me $1,000 for doing the recording.

And as you read above, it’s been a pretty good experience for everyone, as sales have been steady. For anybody interested, they can pick up the audio copy of ‘Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail at either Audible.com or Amazon.com.

Bill Walker is the author of ‘Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail’. He is also the author of ‘Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail’, ‘The Best Way–El Camino de Santiago‘, and ‘Getting High–The Annapurna Circuit in Nepal’.
