This outdoor adventure narrative is the story of 6’11” Bill Walker’s 2005 thru-hike of the 2,180 mile Appalachian Trail, which runs from Georgia to Mount Katahdin in northern Maine. He had never even spent the night outdoors before embarking on this 171 day journey in which he lost 33 pounds. The book has sold consistently well since it was released in 2008.
“So many hiking books are written by experts, for other experts,” Skywalker says. “I was looking to write a book from the perspective of someone who is still anything but an expert.”
Bill Walker is the author of Skywalker–Close Encounters on the Appalachian Trail. He is also the author of Skywalker–Highs and Lows on the Pacific Crest Trail. Walker, who is nearly 7-feet tall, is currently working on a book on the subject of height.
