(photo courtesy of Bill Walker) Hiking long distances is hard enough. Going through the ups and downs of a trail, fighting through weather, people and anything else that might step in your way. There’s making sure you carry enough food to make up for all the calories you burn and hauling enough water to get you from water source to water source. That’s for your average...

He is a bit of a mythical figure in the long-distance hiking community. Here, finally, is the real story of Scott Williamson. Personally, I agree with this thru-hiker. The Pacific Crest Trail is more difficult to thru-hike than the Appalachian Trail. The hiker faces greater extremes of weather and terrain. The snow can play havoc with your calculations (and psyche!). It’s 488 miles longer. The good news is that they are very different. The committed hiker has only one logical course of action–do both of them. I strongly recommend doing the AT first because it’s much easier to plan, and less scary. It’s America’s trail and the best way to...

Runner Takes On Record-Breaking Mission For Mom by Dave Iverson September 17, 2011 Good interview on NPR about former Yale runner, Sam Fox, trying to break the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) speed record. He plans to try to run the trail in a total of 60 days or less, which means an average of 44 days. Wow. That would take 5 days off Scott Williamson’s blazing pace of 2009. Sam’s mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease ten years ago. Sam is hoping to raise $250,000 towards Parkinsons Disease research that would benefit the...

This particular headline has been in the news recently. It’s part of a trend of more evacuations through GPS systems. I was slow warming up to the bona-fides of GPS. However, there have been too many cases of successful rescue via GPS to deny its benefits. A legitimate question though, is whether or not hikers carrying them are prone to take more risks. Another issue I’d like to briefly touch on is hiker safety. It becomes easy for the “ins” and the machos of these great trails to affect such a swagger to act like...
